    In Berlin around 14.000 individuals are injured in road accidents each year. Most of the victims are children, teenagers, young adults and elderly people. The Berlin urban development department is working to provide increased safety for all road users with different measures. The projects and programmes for mobility and road safety education are important elements of their work for more road safety. They aim at considerably reducing the number of road accident casualties. In today's fast-moving society everyone wants to be mobile without being harmed. Therefore, the mastering of everyday's practices that enable this mobility is as important as learning how to read and write. This includes an up-to-date mobility and road safety education. The key aspects are enclosed in the Action Program 2010 of the Transport Division of the Federal State Berlin. Forward-looking mobility education goes far beyond traditional traffic education. Up to now mobility education focuses on primary schools and usually ends with the voluntary bicycle licence.

    Basic principal: “Anyone killed in road traffic is one too many!” With this conviction, the state of North Rhine Westphalia in 2004 has launched a new traffic safety program. Even if the accident rate has reached the historically lowest level in North Rhine Westphalia in 2004 and the number of fatalities is at its lowest level since the introduction of statistics, a further reduction of traffic accidents - particularly those involving personal injury- is sought after. The stated goal of the state government is named "Vision Zero”, this means that no person may come to harm due to road accidents.

    Undoubtedly, the demographic change shows that the number of elderly road users grows more and more throughout the years. Based on an internal discussion the ADAC decided to provide elderly people the possibility to test their driving skills with a neutral driving instructor. In proposing this action, the ADAC helps doubting elderly drivers to test their driving skills in complete anonymity.

    In 2006 the municipality of Chorzów has installed an experimental mini-roundabout with painted horizontal multilayered marks instead of a paved raised traffic island. Compliance rate and acceptance have been found to be comparable to conventional mini roundabouts but at one-third of total implementation costs.
