Pilot Area Liberec

The Liberec Region is a part of the Euroregion Neisse. In the Czech Republic it belongs among the smallest counties in terms of size, and population. Although the important part of the region consists of Jizera Mountains, Liberec region has quite high population density. (135inhab/km²)

Liberec region carries a lot of long-term activities to improve road safety including the pilot testing of new measures. In November 2003, regional council adopted a document called the Road Safety Strategy in the Liberec region, which was subsequently evaluated and updated regularly. In the following years, Liberec region implemented a number of already proved measures, but also several new ones, to improve road safety. The Liberec region managed with all these activities to achieve the desired target, thus halve the number of fatalities from road accidents between 2001 and 2010.

Following pilot activities will be implemented in the Liberec region within the SOL project:

1)     Campaign Step by step in the transport without accidents. The campaign is implemented through a competition of children's collectives of the best visual design or slogan that can reach their peers, but also parents and grandparents. The winning design will be placed on a billboard on selected mean of public transport (bus/tram) other award-winning designs are exhibited in the same bus/tram as a mobile exhibition. 

2)        Short road safety inspections of buildings road environment with an increased incidence of vulnerable road users. 60 buildings road environments with an increased incidence of vulnerable road users will be inspected under the guidance of a certified road safety auditor concerning possible mistakes in road infrastructure. To be able to evaluate the effectiveness of this measure, there will be also assessed as of 40 primary schools in terms of implementation of measures that have been recommended as a result of short road safety inspections of school surroundings in Liberec Region in 2008 and 2009.

3)        Pilot implementation of full version of the Safe journey to school project in 2 primary schools in Liberec region based on the involvement of children depending on their dominant intelligence. The project will be implemented through school children's parliaments, under the lead of the methodology author with main goals to increase the safety of children on their way to / from school and increasing the share of walking and cycling to school.
